It’s weird that Another World makes an appearance on Beat the Backlog, as it was only a few weeks ago that I was telling our Tom (prior to his excellent video review) that the gameplay shown in Jump Ship’s trailer to Somerville really reminded me of the classic Amiga adventure game. It’s a game I owned on the SNES some 20-plus years ago, and I was a combination of not smart or patient enough to complete it at the time, despite loving the bleak setting and impactful scenes. And then, entirely randomly, after scrolling through 50 pages of shovelware on the Switch eShop, I stumbled across Another World again and quickly decided to splash out a whole £1.79 to overcome the ancient shame of having never reached the end.
Booting the game up for the first time in a lifetime, the title screen brought back a flood of memories. Most of those memories were hazy at best, made up of bits and pieces of various levels that I had only managed to reach thanks to some level select codes I found in an old Games Master cheat book back in the day. (Also, speaking of “Bits and Pieces”, that happens to be the name of the electronics/games store that I bought the pre-owned cartridge from all those years ago – man, I miss that place.) The opening cinematic shows a casually dressed scientist pulling up to his lab in a rather flash Ferrari, before booting up his particle acceleration experiment up amidst a lightning storm. As fate would have it, a bolt of lightning hits the lab at the exact moment that the experiment comes to a conclusion, teleporting the scientist to an alien planet in an explosion of light.

Star wars open world game
Massive Entertainment, Ubisoft, and Lucasfilm Games pulled back the curtain today on the first-ever open world Star Wars game, Star Wars Outlaws, releasing in 2024 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Set between the events of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, players will step into the role of Kay Vess, a clever scoundrel in the galactic underworld. In Star Wars Outlaws, Kay is looking to attempt one of the biggest heists the Outer Rim has ever seen, all in an effort to start a new life. You can check out the official key art — featuring Kay and her companion Nix (perched atop her shoulder), along with a trench coat-wearing BX-commando droid, and other mysterious details — to the right, and the announcement trailer below.
The open world segments have a few breadcrumbs and intel here and there, but I do think the culmination of the open world design mastered by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is evident here. Take a path towards your objective but if you get distracted and something catches your eye go for it!
Lots of little details make this visit to the galaxy far far away one of the most memorable of the last couple of years, but these cities felt real in a way I’ve never experience before, teeming and lived in.
But, Kay isn’t alone in this endeavor, either. The first trailer introduced us to her loyal companion, Nix, a four-legged furry alien who embodies Star Wars creature design at its finest. You’ll also be adventuring alongside a trenchcoat-wearing commando droid called ND-5, as you gather a team for a big heist mission.
